海神在1980年代陸續於十艘新造的极星美國海軍彈道潛艇上服役數年之後，用于替换SSM-N-8天獅星巡弋飛彈作為美國海軍新一代的导弹艦隊彈道飛彈（Fleet Ballistic Missile, FBM）。又被更後繼的极星三叉戟I型导弹取代。義大利本也有意购买北極星，导弹该弹从1968年到1990年代中期也曾配屬在英国皇家海军旗下的极星潜艇上。
